Begin with the unit
IRENA defines renewable power capacity as the maximum net generating capacity of installations using renewable sources to produce electricity. Its 2026 capacity statistics generally describe installations connected at the end of each calendar year. That is different from the electricity actually generated during the year.
This distinction matters in Gulf energy coverage, where large project announcements often dominate the discussion. Capacity describes potential output under defined conditions; generation describes energy produced over time. Neither should be substituted for the other to make a project sound larger or more complete.
Read a company portfolio by stage
Masdar's 2025 sustainability summary illustrates the distinction. It reports 40.2 terawatt-hours of actual generation from operating projects globally, compared with 29.2 terawatt-hours the previous year. Separately, it reports 45.8 gigawatts from projects in operation or under construction.
The company also lists 20.7 gigawatts of secured projects or projects approaching final investment approval, bringing the stated portfolio to 66.5 gigawatts. That total includes different delivery stages. It should not be described as operating capacity, or as generation located entirely in the UAE.
Ask what changed
A reader comparing annual reports can separate new operating projects, acquisitions, construction progress and earlier-stage additions. Those changes have different implications for when electricity may reach a grid. A larger portfolio does not establish that every project has cleared its remaining approvals or financing steps.
The same discipline applies to emissions claims. Masdar reports avoided emissions alongside its output. Such a figure depends on the company's calculation method and comparison baseline; it is not interchangeable with a direct measurement of every project's full lifecycle footprint.
Keep the evidence ladder visible
A practical reporting table can list the project, location, ownership basis, capacity, delivery stage and generation period. Leave missing values explicit. Avoid presenting a memorandum, a secured project and an operating facility as equivalent milestones.
The wider clean-energy story becomes stronger when these distinctions are preserved. IRENA provides a consistent definition for installed capacity; company reports can add delivery stages and actual generation. Read together, they make progress easier to assess without turning ambition into an operating result before the evidence supports it.
